e-file

efileHupp Tax Service is an authorized E-file provider.  We offer free electronic filing for Federal and Ohio tax returns.  Benefits of electronic filing include faster refund, more accurate, more efficient and it’s easier for you.

This is an optional service and is available for free if we prepare your taxes.  If you have your return prepared elsewhere, the e-file only fee starts at $55 (see pricing).

You can choose to e-file both Federal and Ohio or either.

Direct deposit or mail my refund check?

Many people confuse electronic filing with direct deposit.
* Direct deposit is how you receive your refund.
* Electronic filing is how you send your return.
You can choose direct deposit to a checking or savings account even if you file a paper return.  It shortens the processing time by about a week.  It’s a faster, more efficient way of receiving your refund.   If you’re really in a hurry, choose both to e-file AND direct deposit.

If you owe taxes, you can have the funds automatically withdrawn (direct debit) from your checking account or send a voucher (which we provide) with your payment.  To use direct debit, just let us know the date you want the withdrawal (usually April 15) and make sure the money is in your account.  This is great for peace of mind – you can file your taxes early, but don’t have to pay until the exact due date.

How does e-file work?

If you choose to e-file, there is one form (Form 8453) you (and spouse, if filing jointly) must sign.  The signed form is what we send the IRS instead of a return.  Once you pay for your return and sign the form we will transmit your return electronically.  The IRS has 48 hours to “acknowledge” your return.  They tell us whether it has been accepted or not.  If it has, we send you a notice in the mail and you can expect your refund as scheduled.  If it is rejected we will call you to resolve the problem (most common rejections are mismatches between names and social security numbers).  We can re-send the return electronically or we may determine you have to file your return on paper.  If we prepare your return and it turns out you are unable to electronically file, we will refund your e-file fee.

The primary advantage to filing electronically is to get your refund faster.  With direct deposit, you can receive your refund in approximately two weeks.  If you choose to receive your check in the mail, it takes an additional week.

Additional benefits of electronic filing are:

  • Easier – less paperwork for you.  Most people can walk out of our office with only a city return to sign and mail.  No bulky returns to sign, stuff into envelopes, etc.
  • Catch errors up front.  Basic errors are identified, and usually corrected, before the return is filed.  Basic errors include things like matching names with social security numbers and whether a dependent has already been claimed.  If you file a paper return it can take weeks for the IRS to notify you of a problem.
  • Reduce chance of data entry errors.  When you file a paper return, the IRS manually enters the information from your paper return into their computer system.  They are human and they do make mistakes.  Electronic filing ensures the return we prepare is what is in the IRS’s computer system.
  • Save a tree – less paper used.
  • Peace of mind.  According to the IRS, electronic filing is the only proof they accept that you filed your return.  Certified mail proves you sent them something, but not necessarily your tax return.
